Portrait of Jacob Preston
by
Joe Bowler
Jacob Preston has been a full-time working potter for over 45 years. He has lived in Bluffton, SC since the mid-1970s, working for most of that time in a live-work compound that is a retired church, known as the Bluffton Tabernacle. Jacob and his wife Susan live in the beautifully renovated space over the studio.
At this time, Jacob is not working but the shop is still open and pots are being made. Like much of what happens in the Lowcountry, a visit to the studio is somewhat tidal, it ebbs and flows. If the kilns have just been fired, there are lots of pots, High tide. If business has been particularly brisk, then shelves may not be full, but there is always interesting work.
Low tide.
If you haven’t been in for a while, you may be pleasantly surprised at what you find.
Cate Taylor who makes critters out of clay, We have a flock of birds, Crow, Seagulls and Cardinals.
Annabelle Johnson, a "retired" potter is now showing her work here and we love having her pieces.
Brynne Bowler is here making pots and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
